October is one of the most interesting months for a trip to New York. In the parks, the color of the foliage gradually changes, the weather is conducive to long walks, and museums and theaters switch to a busy autumn program. At the same time, for the autumn colors it is better to go in the second half of the month: the exact timing depends on the weather, and Central Park can remain quite green even in early October.

The itinerary is easy to plan so as to alternate walks and museums: spend a few hours in Central Park, walk around Manhattan, and leave a cool or rainy day for exhibitions. In October 2026, a large Off-Broadway program and several new museum projects are added to this.

Central Park: Autumn in the Heart of Manhattan

In October, Central Park gradually turns yellow, orange, and red. The timing varies from year to year, so the brightest colors may appear either in the second half of October or closer to November.

A good walking route starts at The Mall, a long avenue of American elms, and passes through Bethesda Terrace to Bow Bridge. From here you can climb up to Belvedere Castle: from its terraces you can see the Great Lawn and the trees surrounding it.

Central Park is open daily from 6:00 to 1:00, admission is free. You should set aside a few hours for the central part — the main sights are close enough to each other to cover the route on foot.

The Elm Avenue in October

In autumn, the American elms along the Mall gradually turn yellow, transforming one of Central Park's most famous avenues into a long golden corridor

Belvedere Castle

Belvedere Castle stands on one of the highest points in Central Park. From its terraces there is a view of the Great Lawn, and inside there is a small nature center with exhibits about the park.

After Central Park, it's convenient to stop by the Metropolitan Museum of Art — its main building stands right at the eastern edge of the park on Fifth Avenue. You should set aside at least a few hours for the museum: the collection spans everything from Ancient Egypt and European painting to American and contemporary art.

In October 2026, new exhibitions will be added to the permanent collection. Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous opens on October 4, and from October 22 you can see Designing the Gilded Age — an exhibition of drawings and works from the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Both are included in the museum admission price.

For a rainy day, there are a few more options. At the American Museum of Natural History there are dinosaurs, the famous blue whale model, and the Hayden Planetarium.

The Guggenheim Museum is worth visiting both for its collection and for Frank Lloyd Wright's famous spiral building.
And at the Intrepid Museum you can board a real aircraft carrier, see the space shuttle Enterprise, and the submarine Growler.
In October, New York is especially good for long walks: the parks change color, the days are still warm enough, and the cool evenings already remind you that winter is not far off.

Open House New York: The City from Within

If your trip falls on October 16–18, it's worth checking out the Open House New York Weekend program. For three days, hundreds of unusual places open across New York: historic buildings, architecture firms, workshops, theaters, engineering sites, and urban infrastructure.

In 2026, the program includes more than 300 venues across all five boroughs. Some can be visited without prior registration, while other tours have limited capacity and require a ticket. The full program is published before the festival, so it's more convenient to choose specific spots closer to your trip.

This is a good opportunity to see New York not just from the street: to go inside buildings you usually just walk past, to see how the city's infrastructure works, and to add to your standard itinerary a place that on an ordinary day may be closed to the public altogether.

Halloween in Greenwich Village

On October 31, Greenwich Village becomes the center of New York's Halloween. Giant puppets, musicians, and thousands of costumed participants parade along Sixth Avenue — you can watch the parade for free.

Autumn Market at Union Square

In October, the Union Square farmers market features local apples, cider, pumpkins, and other seasonal produce. The market operates year-round, but in autumn the selection is especially well suited to the season.

In October, New York averages around +18 °C during the day and +11 °C at night, so a light jacket, comfortable shoes, and an umbrella will come in handy. The second half of the month is better for autumn foliage, although the timing varies slightly each year.

The subway and buses use OMNY: a ride costs $3, with a weekly cap of $35. It's best to book accommodation in advance — October remains a popular month, especially in Manhattan.

October is well suited for combining walks, parks, and museums. The second half of the month is usually more interesting for autumn colors, and by October 31, Halloween decorations and events across the city are added to the mix.
